So just giant birds I guess…ĭjinni: Idiotic men made of magic. I kind of ignored the description, so in my head they look like giant pterodactyls that have feathers and a more bird-like face. Rocs: Big predatory birds that are magical creatures like the Buraqi. However, they are the highlight of this series to me so please can I have one? Unfortunately they are dumb like regular horses and get caught by humans who bind them with iron. Think horses made out of sand and fire that run like the wind and never seem to get tired. To unconfuse you, I’ve created a helpful little guide to the mythology of Rebel of the Sands – or at least how I understand things to be.īuraqi: The most awesome horses you can imagine that aren’t also unicorns. It’s filled with magic, myth and mostly sand and I can imagine all the mentions of djinni and demdji can be a little confusing at first. I wasn’t blown away by this novel, but I did love the world that Hamilton build. Of course, that is until she meets Jin, handsome as he is, and she finds out she has a heart after all. She gives up everything for this – even lets people she loves die – and will stop for literally nothing. I really enjoyed the first half of the novel which sets up our main character Amani as a bad-ass cross dressing camel of the desert who wants nothing more then to leave the tiny town she comes from. There’s gun slinging, there’s magic and of course there is a love story. Rebel of the Sands written by Alwyn Hamilton is a YA Western with middle eastern influences.
